We had the most wonderful stay at Borgomaro this August. Absolutely EVERYTHING about this hotel is amazing - beautiful rooms and wonderful garden and pool set in the most picturesque Italian village only 20 minutes from the coast. We travelled with our 2 children who are 10 and 7 years old - they loved the pool and everything felt so relaxed. The staff here are beyond words - so welcoming and helpful in every way possible - making reservations at restaurants to serving delicious lunch and tea. We cannot thank every here are the hotel enough - we had the best week together thank to their care and consideration to make us all feel so welcome and at home.

We don't usually write a lot of reviews, but we want to make an exception now. It's been two weeks since we stayed in Relais del Maro for 5 nights and since then not one day has passed without thinking about the hotel, the people we met, the region. All underneath 5-star reviews are true. The authenticity, the heart-warming values, the charming people... The whole team does such a great job to make you feel at home. One feels genuinly welcome, in style, always. Breakfast is incredible (with wonderful daily prepared fruit salad and carefully chosen local products), the whole atmosphere of the Relais feels perfect, in all of its details. We loved it. The book of the region that you receive upon arrival, created and edited by Elena herself, was very helpful. It points out the things to see, things to do, with lots of suggestions for everyone's choice. We also very much appreciated the suggestions where to go for diner, which made us find extraordinary places with local food and meet with local young entrepreneurs with such a genuine philosophy and clear vision on sustainability, respect for our soil, and for our future. (in particular Petricor in Lucinasco - check them out !! (petricor-dot-it on the website) and also the "Osteria Amaro di Podere del Maro", in Borgomaro itself. In summary, we found a little bit of "heaven on earth", and it's in Liguria.

What a great place to stay. It was a very challenging year with Covid, but the owners were so understanding when we cancelled our stay but we were happy that in the end we did go and we still had our room we initially reserved. The place is marvelous, the personnel: super kind! Our son George or Giorgio in Italian loved the vacation and he loved especially the pancakes in the morning, he thinks they were the best ever! Breakfast was excellent, we enjoyed it every morning! Relais del maro was a great find, a real diamant. We hope to pass here again in the future. Elena and her mom are the greatest hosts. Thanks for making our stay so great.

Visitors return to Relais del Maro time and again, and you can see why. It’s 30 minutes drive up into the hills inland from Imperia, a rather scruffy seaside town with an attractive historic centre in Porto Maurizio. Borgomaro itself is a small place of steep narrow streets and stairways, perched on the banks of a mountain torrent. The main hotel building is on the river bank opposite the tiny town square, and there are two annexes in the village itself. We stayed in the main building, convenient for the pool and the excellent breakfast buffet remarked on (rightly) by many previous TripAdvisor reviewers. The place is wonderfully relaxing and has been intelligently converted with well-appointed rooms, agreeable decor and efficient air conditioning. The staff are universally charming, even the housekeepers (who seemed genuinely pleased to see us, not just instructed to smile out of politeness): a special shout out here to Martina, waitress/receptionist/fixer/linguist/woman-of-all-work, who has useful friends throughout Liguria and a collection of summer dresses straight out of an Italian new wave movie. Elena the owner is a pioneer: Borgomaro had next to no tourist infrastructure, so the Relais set out to create one, preparing and publishing local guides and by its presence encouraging at least one local business (Etta’s restaurant in the village square just across the bridge) to relocate. We’ll be back.
